In Managua International Airport there are several rent-a-car companies where a regular car or 4Wdrive vehicle can be rented (AVIS, BUDGET, etc). Regular car will be enough to get to Selva Negra as it is paved road. But if you want to explore other places better it is 4WD. If you choose to drive to Selva Negra, the trip will be approximately an hour and a half to two hour drive from the Managua airport. From the airport, you will take the Nothern Highway (Carretera Norte) towards Matagalpa. Once on the highway it is rather hard to get lost, since it will lead you directly to the city of Matagalpa. There will be several turn off point that will lead you towards other cities, such as Tipitapa, Ramas, and Esteli. But so long as you don't get off the main road you will be headed on a straight route to Matagalpa. If, you feel unsure, simply pull your head out the window and howler at anyone "a Matagalpa?" and they will point you the way. It will take you about 1:15 to 1:45 to reach Matagalpa. Once in Matagalpa, you will turn towards Jinotega, the city North of Matagalpa. This is another highway that will lead you on a straight path upwards towards Selva Negra. It will take you approximately 15 minutes to reach the entrance to Selva Negra. The turn off to Selva Negra will be at approximately Kilometer Marker 140. You will see the tank, which marks the entrance to the resort as well as a billboard pointing to the entrance. After the turn-off, it will be approximately one mile and you will reach a gate, where you will either let them know you have a reservation, or pay C$30 Cordobas, which is a consumable admission charge to the resort. The drive from Managua to Selva Negra is an amazing scenic drive, driving from the flat land of the capital, Managua, around the Lake of Managua and headed to a slow climb up to the Highlands of Matagalpa.
