Selva Negra Mountain Resort had the opportunity to celebrate its 30th Anniversary this year. This story too, has it's roots in coffee, it all started when two young friends, Alberto Vogl and Otto Kuhl, emigrated from Germany in late 1880s, they were invited by the Nicaraguan government to help develop the wild northern highlands of that beautiful country. Once here they both married the two daughters of the local Governor, who was himself one on the first coffee growers of the region. So, Albert Vogl and Rosenda founded a coffee farm and named it Bavaria, while Otto Kühl and Meta called their farm Alsace. To make this long story short…Romantically, two descendants, one from Albert´s side, and the other Otto´s (Mausi Hayn and Eddy Kühl) met and married in 1967. |

Since neither Eddy nor Mausi had the good fortune of inheriting the original farms, after their marriage they founded (in 1975) a coffee farm and named it "Selva Negra". Here at 4,300 feet average in elevation, with the ideal climate and excellent condition for gourmet coffee growing, they patented the name Selva Negra Estate Coffee in the United States. But in order to share this beauty they built a mountain resort in 1976 and named it Selva Negra Mountain Resort. This year is the 30th Anniversary of the opening of these charming installations, which now consist of 23 bungalows, the main lodge, a youth hostel, a non-denominational rustic Chapel, and three conference rooms. It has been providing service to the public for 30 consecutive years. And now Mausi and Eddy, along with their daughters and grandchildren attend it personally, and welcome you in Spanish, English and German. !Welcome to Selva Negra! |
