The JavaVino Concept

The following was written by Heddy Kuhl, daughter of Mausi and Eddy Kuhl, and owner of JavaVino, where you can find Selva Negra Estate Coffee in Atlanta, Ga.
While Steve and I lived in London we visited lots of pubs, wine cellars, bars, tratorrias and restaurants throughout Europe. We loved the neighborhood pubs and the mixture of culture and age groups in these establishments. Steve has always been passionate about wine and has a great pallet for distinctive flavors in all foods. Basically, he's a taste bud snob! I didn't think I would ever get Steve back home after he indulged in great European wines, espressos and cheeses! We came up with the JavaVino concept on a napkin in a little pub in Ireland. It was all daydreaming back then, but the idea slowly grew. Funding came after much begging…but here we are today, and here you are today, reading this!
I had a solid backbone in the coffee industry, but couldn't contribute too much in the farming aspect; my older sister had already snagged that job! I wanted to take advantage of the coffee knowledge my family had and run something here in the States. Knowing I wanted to do something with coffee was just the beginning of lots of ideas. I wanted to help Selva Negra get to the next level. Coffee farmers around the world sell their coffee to green bean brokers and then never know where their coffee ends up. Consumers know very little about the cup of coffee they are drinking, except maybe the roast profile and, rarely, the country it came from. I wanted our customers to know about those little beans that it took to make THAT cup! I wanted to share the work and lives of the people that picked those beans. I wanted to tell everyone about the sustainable concept and about the organic practices at Selva Negra. The only way I could do that was to import our own container and sell it ourselves! So that's what we did. We imported our first container of Selva Negra Estate Coffee from my parents and sold it little by little. We bragged about its background, about the land and the work behind it.
The message I want to relay is that here at JavaVino, we're a small mom and pop shop. We want folks to know about our coffee background and where our coffee comes from. We want you to know that at JavaVino you truly get the true seed-to-cup experience. We grow, pick, process, export, import, roast, grind and brew our coffee beans. We are your farmer, your broker, your roaster, your brewer and your baristas. These little coffee beans that you enjoy at JavaVino don't leave my family's hands until they are in yours! - Heddy Kuhl
