Highlights of the Quarter (July - September 2006)
The Summer months are filled with survival tactics. With the 118 inches of rainfall we spend significant amount of time preventing damage to the plantillos. We're also working on setting up new latrines around the farm which are among the most sustainable available. Exciting News of the Quarter
  • Selva Negra is honored to have appeared in the National Geographic Traveler May/June issue. A short article about the orchids on the estate was written by Lisa Gerry. -Read More-
  • We're proud to announce the birth of Aiden Kuhl Franklin, son of Heddy Kuhl and Steve Franklin. Heddy is Mausi and Eddy's daughter.-Read More-

The rainy season is here
Due to extreme rains we receive in our area, we must make many efforts to protect the crop and the property at the estate. Punning and fertilization with compost continue this quarter as well.-Read More-
New Sustainable Developments
In an effort to control the wastewater at the estate we're working on two new latrine systems. We will also present an article by Leopoldo Miranda of the US fish and wildlife agency on shade coffee and continue the discussion of our energy generation attempts.-Read More-
How Do We Control Weed and Pests
One of the greatest challenges in growing an organic and environmentally friendly product is eliminating the use of herbicides and pesticides. At Selva Negra we work exhaustively in developing a solution to our weeds and pests. All efforts are labor intensive and require extensive research.-Read More-
