Selva Negra Coffee Estate Quarterly Newsletter
2007 1st Quarter

Buyer Visits

We've been very busy this quarter hosting many people in the coffee industry. Among those that paid us a visit were Allegro Coffee, The Rogers Family, Costco, Green Mountain Coffee, Starbucks, Stockton Graham, Don Cesar Ros, and JavaVino. Many of these visits were from current buyers and roasters of our coffee who bring their staff to witness first hand our quality control and sustainable efforts. Others were organizations that currently don't carry Selva Negra but visit origin countries to train their staff on issues pertinent to specific origins.
Among the activities that took place during these visits were extensive tours of the installations, the plantation, and the many sustainable projects, such as the recycling of the coffee by products, making compost with Californian Red Worms of the coffee pulp, using as a ground cover the coffee husk, instead of herbicide, treating the water of the coffee processing into irrigation water and using the fermentation for methane gas. In the plantation competitions were performed to see which group could pick not only the most but also the best quality coffee. They were exposed to the guidelines that our pickers go through when picking the coffee; at the farm we're more interested in the quality of the bean than the volume picked.
Hosting coffee events has become a specialty of ours; proven by the numbers of visitors we've had this year. If you're interesting in visiting the farm with your group and learning all it has to offer please contact Mausi: mausi@selvanegra.com.ni If your interested in being part of a group trip, JavaVino is planning a visit in November 2007 with a group of coffee roasters. Please contact JavaVino directly at info@javavino.com for details regarding the trip and availability.
