Don Gregorio Cruz, known as Don Goyo, was born in the farm that is now known as The Hammonia/Selva Negra, in 1956. He studied at the school of Santa Maria because at the time there was no school here. He studied up to 3rd grade and at the age of 13 years began working at the farm and has since worked here. He has only worked in the coffee; his entire life has been dedicated to it, and is now responsible for the harvest at Selva Negra and the health of the farm. | |

He's had the opportunity to train in various fields as well as travel abroad to Honduras and El Salvador to attend lectures and learn from other farms facing similar challenges as ours. With these training sessions and the opportunity to work with professionals visiting the farm, he has achieved great improvement of the crops in the farm. Since Don Goyo has literally grown up in the Selva Negra coffee plantation, he has the greatest knowledge of the diseases of the coffee that affect us. He knows all about the symptoms of most diseases, how they get started, areas of development of the disease, which pests are responsible, and not only how to cure it by also prevents it. Since there are also new pests and new diseases, he has been equipped with the imitative to take action and seek assistance from other professionals whenever necessary. |

He is also responsible for the laboratory; there he develops organic products for control of pests and diseases. Such products include:
He has six children, four of which work at the farm, and one who works in the laboratory directly with him. He enjoys working close to his boys and takes every opportunity to pass his knowledge on to them, in hopes that they will be more prepared and have a better start in life. |

Among his many responsibilities is working directly with the Rainforest Alliance and Bio Latina organic certification when they come for inspections and reviews of the estate. He enjoys this interaction very much since it affords him an opportunity to better understand the regulations that he must help implement. |
