Our Sustainable Efforts - Hydropower Updates

Update on the water turbine. Well, all good projects suffer set backs. So, we have a few to report on our hydropower generation. First the hydraulic turbine exploded, yes, it exploded, all gone, the "cucharas" where the water makes it rotate, were all over the place, water was pouring outside the container, the frame was all in pieces. Total disaster. Mr. Georges, who made the turbine for us, is in charge of solving the problem. While he's working on this, we've had the farm without light and Armando, a farm employee is in charge of getting the electrician, and making all the necessary connections. In the middle of this turmoil, Mausi had to leave the farm to attend a seminar, and Eddy was also out of the farm. Like they say, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. The farm works like a well oiled machine even in moments of trouble, and lead supervisors are unavailable. It was a wonderful feeling for Mausi to be able to leave the farm with such a big problem behind, and know that the personnel will take care of everything. Vickie was the driver for all of them who were running here and there, closing valves so the pipelines would not explode with so much pressure, taking the electrician to the main kitchen as they urgently needed the light to run the tortilla machine. By the time Mausi returned Don Georges removed the whole turbine, only left the generator, and after only a couple of days effort he had the problem resolved. We are grateful at the way he faced the problem and offered a fast and thorough solution.
Changes to the way we do things at the farm is expected and we assume will be an ongoing issue in the energy preservation effort. The most recent changes include the installation of solar hot water heaters in cabins, and the converting the greenhouses away from flower production to vegetables production since the latter requires significantly less light for proper growth. And we're on a continuous search for energy efficient irons and ironing boards, and low wattage light bulbs that work in such humid conditions as the rain forests we live in. Our research has been unsuccessful in locating either, if you have any suggestions please contact us: karen@selvanegra.com
