Sustainable Development

The Mountain Resort and Eco Lodge at Selva Negra is widely known and recognized as a cool and environmental destination. It fits into many of the catch phrases of tourism (eco-tourism, agritourism, adventure tourism, destination weddings, etc..) but none of it truly fits it like a glove. The resort is one part of the major sustainable culture including the coffee estate and agricultural projects, but is also more than that. It is an entry point for tourists and interested parties to learn of the projects ongoing at Selva Negra.

To date we haven't marketed and positioned to hotel properly for all it has to offer. The wealth of nature and organic living that it has to offer needs a little help. In order to be a truly sustainable place we not only have to support the natural and environmental aspects but also the economical aspects. Without the financial support, it is not possible to continue with the sustainable projects.

In this effort and with the assistance of Cooper Ecological Monitoring we hosted Mark Billings for four weeks to lead bird walks, talk to guests and gather information on the feasibility of starting an internship. The intern, like Mark Billings, would focus on educating the guests about the connections between coffee cultivating, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. Mark Billings findings during his stay are now a framework which will serve to work on the internships as well as better prepare our staff and infrastructure to improve the exposure of all Selva Negra has to offer.
