Coffee Flowering

This is the coffee flowering and what a beautiful sight and aroma it produces. It's amazing what a difference the smell is to the aroma produced from a cup of brewed coffee. The smell of the flower is such a sweet, honeylike smell that comes in waves with the wind.

Flowering in coffee is quite a spectacle. While the coffee is flowering, you can see acres of trees with tiny small white flowers dangling all around. We joke that it is the time of year when it snows. Of course ours is snow in the most wonderful temperature with light breezes that carry the scent of the flowers. The hovering honeybees and butterflies are great to watch, although they're not needed for pollinating since Arabica coffee trees are self-pollinating. Flowering time offers unique photo opportunities in the coffee plantation; t is a treat for the eyes and nose.

Here at Selva Negra we have about 3 flowering times due to the varying elevations and coffee varieties. Also each coffee tree can flower at different times. The coffee flowering is hard to time and can happen anytime in March to May, therefore it is difficult for a visitor to intentionally arrive during the coffee flowering times. Even for those of us who live here, we can easily get busy with our duties and say "I'll go tomorrow" but by then they could be gone. Only lasting a day or two, they are something to dedicate the time out of your schedule to go and witness while you can. We hope you enjoy our pictures, and we look forward to your comments.
