Maintenance of the Coffee Plantillos - Pruning
Picture:
Pruning
of the shade trees involves a lot of work, since most of the shade
trees at Selva Negra are centennial native trees, and therefore
tall and sturdy. Some of the shade trees require climbing and
pruning using special equipment. Note the size of some of these
trees in the coffee plantation, in the bottom right hand side
of the picture, you see a young man that serves as reference to
the size of the trees. Prunning involves the cutting down of all
ivy and dead branches of all shade trees all over the plantation.
We have 60% of shade during the summer and 40% shade during the
rainy season. Prunning is done selectively all over the farm,
an area is picked because of excess shade and it is pruned. Usually
we come back to this same area in about 6 years. Aproximately
20% of the shade of the plantation is pruned each year.
