All about Selva Negra

Selva Negra is located on the site of one of the first coffee plantations in the area, it has been producing coffee since the late 1800s and we take pride in maintaining a coffee estate, agriculture farm and nature reserve that preserves the past to be enjoyed for many generations to come. We're very proud that you've chosen to consider us as your travel destination.

In 1975, Eddy Kühl and Mausi Hayn chose this location in the mountains of northern Nicaragua to found a Mountain Hotel. This region of Nicaragua is where German immigrants came during the second half of the 19th century and where they founded some of the first coffee plantations of Matagalpa. The name, Selva Negra comes from the German word and location, Schwarzwald, area where Mausi´s grandfather was born. The climate at Selva Negra is almost always optimal for tourists at 19º Celsius (70° Farenheit). It´s a calm place to pass your honeymoon, study, read, celebrate weddings, attend seminars or congresses, horseback ride in the forest, take a coffee tour, bird watch, or engage in physical activity of all levels.

"Guests are encouraged to wander around the farm. I followed my nose to the small coffee-roasting plant, where beans were being prepared for local consumption (most of the crop is exported), then strolled past plantations where Mausi's ingenious insect traps do away with the need for pesticides, and to the beds that provide roses, lilies and chrysanthemums for the restaurant table."

-UK Telegraph

"A trip to Selva Negra is a visit to another world—perhaps something like Germany's Black Forest, for which the area and the mountain resort are named. You can easily spend two or three days at Selva Negra, relaxing and exploring. It's one of the more pleasant places in Nicaragua to read books and sip fresh java on the porch overlooking the lake. But if you enjoy hiking, this is one of the best places in the north to do so."

-Moon Handbooks Nicaragua

"With more than 600 species of orchids, Nicaragua is prime territory for one of nature's most exquisite treasures. Selva Negra Mountain Resort in the central region of the country - boasts at least 140 species on its grounds, with 14 hiking trails that make orchid sighting anything but rare."

We pride ourselves with the cupping quality of our coffee as stated by those that purchase our coffee

"It has a full body, great acidity, some milk chocolate notes, citrus notes (Lemon), and a clean finish. Overall, this coffee is very well balanced."

-Boston Stoker

"It has excellent chocolate flavor, that has hints of aromatic wood to it, and spiciness. The acidity is in balance with the other flavors and reveals itself as the cup cools. Multiple coexistent flavors like this are the benchmark of good complexity, flavors that alternate as you try to every cupper appreciates; an interesting sensory problem! And its what makes the Selva Negra great..."

-Sweet Marias

"A Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee grown on a model sustainable farm in the highlands of Nicaragua with bold chocolate and nut tones. This coffee has a creamy smooth texture."

-Coffee Depot

"This should be considered a "classic" cup. It has great body, clean flavor and balance. This Selva Negra contains chocolate, lemon, plum and honey undertones and its French roast brings out a rich caramel aroma and sweet dark chocolate, citrus-like acidity."
